Level design: teach → test → twist

  1. TtsetNov 4, 2026, 12:38 AM

One pattern shows up in almost every well-loved platformer, and it works just as well in a 48-hour jam: introduce each mechanic in three beats.

Three level sections: a safe small gap, a wider gap over spikes, and a gap with a moving platform

    1. Teach. Show the mechanic where failing costs nothing. A small gap with ground just below teaches "you can jump" without killing anyone.
    2. Test. Same mechanic, now with a penalty. A wider gap over spikes. The player already knows the move, so a failure feels fair.
    3. Twist. Combine it with something new: the gap is now too wide unless you use the moving platform. This is the moment players remember.

Why it works in jam games

    • No tutorial text needed. Players learn by doing, and judges love that.
    • Your levels can be short. Three beats per mechanic and 3–4 mechanics already make a satisfying 5-minute game.
    • It forces you to cut. If a mechanic doesn't have an interesting twist, it probably isn't worth building this week.
